Shutter Materials and Considerations

Antigua

The Antigua shutters from Shutup Shutters is an entry-level premium product made from MDF, covered with an extruded polypropylene coating. Available in most of our popular styles, Antigua has a high-quality finish, making it a versatile and durable choice for your home. Quick and easy to clean, Antigua is ideal for small and medium sized windows, as there are limitations when using it in larger installations or special shapes. If you are looking for shutters for a specific space, either in size or shape, then our Fiji or Sumatra materials would help you realise your vision. Fiji and Sumatra are crafted from lightweight sustainable hardwoods, available in a broad range of colours and finishes, making them a more versatile choice for plantation shutters. As MDF is a robust, and hardwearing material, it is a good choice for those with a busier family life. If your furnishings need to be a little bit more resistant to scratches and bumps, then MDF may be the material for you.
  • Proven long term performance and stability

Bermuda

Crafted from a seamless blend of painted MDF, with ABS louvres, Bermuda shutters offer a number of extra design choices beyond our entry-level Antigua range. With a choice of 28 stylish colour choices, the frame and panels are painted to an incredibly high standard, providing a more natural finish for the shutters. Bermuda is available in wide range of louvre sizes, to suit your requirements of both light and privacy, as well as personal preference. As the louvres are manufactured from ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) the panel weight of the shutter is reduced. This means that single panels can be much wider than the Antigua range. As Bermuda is also made with a polypropylene coating, the shutters are protected from changes in ambient temperature which can lead to condensation. Both MDF and ABS are sturdy materials, making Bermuda a good choice for homes that have a busier family life. If your furnishings get a few more scratches and bumps than you’d like, then Bermuda may be the range for you.

Java

Unlike the other Shutup shutter ranges, Java is crafted from high-grade ABS (acrylonile butadiene styrene), a more robust alternative to cheaper vinyl, shutters. ABS is a hard, lightweight plastic that is used for a range of purposes due to its shock absorbing properties. Being crafted from ABS, rather than wood or MDF, means that Java is fully waterproof, making it an ideal material for rooms with condensation issues or increased exposure to water. In bathrooms, kitchens or wetrooms, the shutters are easy to dry, and do not absorb moisture like other materials. Each shutter has a high-quality finish that means it is virtually impossible to tell that the shutters are plastic. Java is available in 6 shades of white, and a variety of louvre sizes, providing a style that suits a wide range of interiors. Whether you are looking to soak in the bath with added privacy, or bring light into your kitchen, the Java range can help bring your vision to light.

Cuba and Fiji

Fiji shutters are made from lightweight hardwood, making them ideal for larger windows, bay windows, and wide openings such as patio doors or room dividers. Their strong yet lightweight construction allows them to operate smoothly across wider spans, making them well suited to bi-fold and by-pass track systems. The reduced weight also helps minimise strain on hinges and frames, supporting reliable long-term performance. Cuba shutters combine a durable MDF frame with lightweight hardwood panels, offering a practical and cost-effective shutter option. The lighter panels allow larger window spans and multiple hinged panels while helping reduce the risk of bowing over time. Available in a range of colours and louvre sizes, Cuba shutters provide flexible light control and privacy for most interior spaces.
